March 9, 2011, New York, NY-- On Saturday, March 12, 2011, writer and activist Kevin Powell, along with April Silver of Akila Worksongs Inc., presents the launch event for the new organization BK Nation.  The event will be a networking mix and mingle with live music performances.  The evening’s festivities will be hosted at Brooklyn’s own Five Spot located at 459 Myrtle Avenue, from 7 to 11pm, in the Fort Greene community. The event is free and all are welcome.

BK Nation is the brainchild and new organization Kevin Powell is spearheading as a bridge to information and resources for Brooklyn residents of all backgrounds."During my Congressional campaigns in 2008 and 2010 it became very obvious to me that so many Brooklynites had no idea where to go for basic quality of life services, like help with housing, money for their children to attend college, afterschool programs, and much more. The mission of BK Nation is to be that bridge,” states Mr. Powell. Out of that necessity BK Nation was formed and the series of events are a component of that platform. BK Nation will be part town hall meeting and part networking for Brooklyn citizens.“These quarterly sessions are part of a larger plan to create a major online directory by and for the people of Brooklyn," Powell says of the event series and BK Nation as a whole.

The event’s line up will include Brooklyn residents as the dj and live musical performances. This inaugural event features DJ Trauma, plus a live musical performance Miss Toni Blackman, emcee/freestylist, and a live band composed of Brooklyn-based musicians.  “We decided to host BK Nation at The Five Spot because it was very important to us to support local Brooklyn businesses. Malik Armstead the Five Spot’s proprietor has always opened his doors in support of the community. So in return we are bringing the community to him," adds Powell.

Powell and his BK NATION will produce quarterly networking events for “Brooklyn People”… those who live in, work in or just love Brooklyn.  Events will be held the second Saturday of March, June, and September. Every December Kevin and BK Nation will host his annual holiday party and clothing drive, as he has been doing for the past 10 years.

ABOUT KEVIN POWELL

Kevin Powell is widely considered one of America's leading political and cultural voices in these early years of the 21st century. An acclaimed community activist and award-winning writer, Powell was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, and is the product of a single mother led household, extreme poverty, fatherlessness, and violence. In spite of these harsh circumstances, Powell studied at Rutgers University in New Jersey and he has become one of the most prolific and respected writers and voices of his generation. He is the author or editor of 10 books, including his newest, Open Letters to America, a collection of essays that examine American leadership, politics, and various social issues in the era of Barack Obama. Additionally, Powell’s writings have appeared in a range of publications including The Washington Post, Newsweek, Essence, Ebony, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Vibe, where he was a senior writer for several years documenting, most famously, the life and times of the late Tupac Shakur. In fact, Kevin’s next two books include The Education of Kevin Powell, an autobiography of his own childhood and youth, and Tupac Shakur: A Biography. As an activist, Powell has worked on a range of concerns, including voter registration, Hurricane Katrina relief, education, the environment, eradicating poverty, and supply and resource support for post-earthquake Haiti. As an extension of his activism work, Powell also routinely does college, corporate, and community lectures across America and internationally, and he is a frequent presence on television and radio offering his commentary on a range of issues, including on the Oprah Show where he was a part of the national conversation on domestic violence and how men can help to end the assault on women and girls. Powell is not only a writer and activist, but also a business owner, and he has a particularly keen interest, these days, in job training and job creation, community development, and incubating small and medium-sized American businesses. Finally, a long-time and proud resident of Brooklyn, New York, Kevin Powell was a 2010 Democratic candidate for Congress in Brooklyn.
