8th Grade NYC - Legal Outreach Summer Law Institute (Accepting Applications on a rolling basis - Final Applications are Due March 1st)

The Summer Law Institute is an intensive five-week program for rising ninth graders that seeks to inspire students to strive for academic excellence and to pursue careers in the law. The program, which includes a criminal justice and trial process curriculum, guest speakers, field trips and a mock trial competition, also teaches students time management, essay writing and test taking skills, good study habits, and professionalism so that they are uniquely prepared to succeed in high school.  

SLI students are recruited from various junior high schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx beginning in January.  Individual and group interviews take place through the end of March with final decisions being announced in April.  About 24-32 students will be accepted to each of our six SLIs at each of our partnering institutions, which include Columbia Law School, NYU Law School, Brooklyn Law School, Fordham Law School, St. John's Law School and New York Law School.  If Legal outreach does not recruit at your child's school, please feel free to download the attached application.

Students accepted to participate in an SLI are required to attend the entire program.  The SLI 2013 will take place July 1, 2013 to the August 2, 2013.  Further, students must participate in an SLI to be eligible to apply to Legal Outreach's four-year College Bound program.

Welcome to the Office of Admission

The Office of Admission at Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) is committed to recruiting highly motivated young adults from all five boroughs of New York City. It is our goal to provide our students with a challenging liberal arts curriculum-one that fosters and cultivates their intellectual curiosity and creativity. To ensure the individual success of students in our Early College program, we carefully consider the results of a math and writing assessment before interviewing eligible candidates for admission. We seek to admit those applicants who demonstrate maturity, intellectual curiosity, and a love of learning.

Academic ExpectationsAccepted BHSEC students can look forward to completing most of the high school program and the required New York State Regents Exams in the first two years. Qualified ninth and tenth grade students are eligible for entry into the early college program. At the end of four years, students will have completed 60 college credits and received the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree in the liberal arts and sciences from Bard College as well as a New York State Regents diploma.

Open Houses and Information Sessions

Prospective students and their parents may visit a BHSEC campus during an Open House or Information Session to find out more about the school.
Please keep in mind that attending an open house or information session is not a requirement for admission to BHSEC.  Students are not penalized in any way during the admission process  by not visiting BHSEC prior to applying.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarships (8 listed) Application Deadline May 25, 2012

Click here > The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is pleased to open its scholarship application process to students seeking financial assistance for the 2012-2013 academic school year. The scholarship process is competitive and awards are made annually. Disbursements are made each semester based on a verification process that has been designed to ensure that scholarship applicants are meeting academic expectations and have an unmet financial need.

All classifications of students are invited to apply for a TMCF scholarship. 

TMCF Scholarships:

• Are merit based; however, applicants must have a financial need to qualify.
• Awardees must re-apply annually for renewal.
• Are restricted for payment of tuition, on campus room and board, books and fees.
• Average awards are $2,200 per student per semester.
• Are paid to the college or university on behalf of the students to be credited to their school accounts. Awards are not paid directly to students.

MITES is rooted in MIT's belief in the importance of students from diverse populations to pursue higher education and careers in these fields.

Click here > MIT’s Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP) in the School of Engineering (SOE) runs five core programs for middle and high school students.  In 1975, the SOE launched the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program to address the low numbers of minority students pursuing advanced technical degrees. Now the MITES Program is a rigorous six-week residential, academic enrichment summer program for talented high school students who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering. This national program stresses the value and reward of pursuing advanced technical degrees and careers while developing the skills necessary to achieve success in science and engineering. MITES is rooted in MIT's belief in the importance of students from diverse populations to pursue higher education and careers in these fields.

Selected students build self-confidence in their ability to be successful in a demanding academic atmosphere, and have a chance to work with and befriend individuals of different racial, ethnic and other backgrounds. Although admission to MIT is not the focus of MITES, for its graduates, there is a strong record of successful admission to MIT and to other engineering and science universities.
